Also known as chokeberry, these native shrubs bear loads of tart astringent berries. (Hence the "choke.")
They thrive with low fertility, heavy clay, and soggy soils.
Spring brings beautiful clusters of white flowers, summer brings glossy leaves and fall beautiful red foliage. They are frequently used as ornamentals.
If you don't add too many to your smoothie they add a pleasant cherry-like flavor, a dark purple color and loads of antioxidants.
But if you don't want to use them, don't worry. The birds will eat them quite happily.
