Butternut trees or white walnuts were deeply valued by the native Americans and European settlers alike for their rich buttery nutmeats. But in the 1900s a canker began to spread, which seems destined to wipe out American butternuts.
However, trees being the adaptable creatures that they are, butternuts found a way to pass on their genes anyway. They crossed with heartnuts, also known as Japanese walnut.
Heartnuts are not at all affected by the canker and the two trees are both extremely productive.
However, heartnuts are extremely easy to crack while butternuts are generally very difficult. Their offspring are generally resistant to canker and very productive as well, often looking very similar to the butternut.
We call them butterhearts, but you could also call them buartnuts.
Plant at least two trees for heavier yields.
