Comfrey (aka Boneset or Knitbone) is a wonderful multipurpose plant!

  • It's large fleshy roots can be planted to form a barrier for rhizomatic weeds like quack grass.

  • The large fleshy leaves can be used as a chop and drop mulch 3 times a year or as a compost booster.

  • In addition, comfrey has a long and repeated bloom cycle, making it a good plant to support pollinators.

  • Traditionally it has been used as a wound healer and with good reason; it has high levels of allantoin which help wounds heal quickly. It's also an anti-inflammatory herb and has been used for pain relief.

*There has been much ado about PAs in comfrey. If you are worried about it, just don't use comfrey internally.

Comfrey is very easy to start. Simply cut the root pieces into sections as small as 1", lay them horizontally in the soil, keep moist, and watch for a sprout in a few weeks.

This is a non-seeding, non-spreading type of comfrey. We don't know the exact variety, but it looks identical to the popular Bocking 14 Russian Comfrey.

Approximately three 4-6" of root cuttings per unit (15" total).

*Ships in spring and fall.

Hardiness: USDA zones 3-9
