Gooseberry | Tart & Sweet Berries for Pies and Preserves
Remember your grandmother's gooseberry pie? That perfect balance of sweet-tart that makes your mouth water just thinking about it? These thornless beauties bring that nostalgic flavor back to your garden without the battle scars.
Gooseberries are close relatives of currants, both belonging to the Ribes genus, but gooseberries produce larger individual berries perfect for fresh eating and cooking. Growing 4-7 feet tall, they are ideal for edible hedges or mixed borders. The fruit is deep maroon-red when ripe, with and full and sweet flavor better than most gooseberry cultivars..
These hardy shrubs tolerate partial shade better than most fruit, making them perfect for forest gardens and under fruit trees. Plant can be thorny, but the fruit is exceptional fresh or in cooking for pies, jams, and traditional preserves. Self-fertile and productive for decades with minimal care.
Jeanne - deep maroon-red fruits with full sweet flavor better than most gooseberry cultivars.
Black Velvet - deep purple fruits the size of seedless grapes. Very vigorous growth, and very good flavor when vine-ripened.
