Hazelnuts are a quick bang for your buck, sometimes bearing in 3-5 years.
A staple of the American savanna ecosystem they need light and are adapted to regular disturbance. If you have a wildfire, they will spring back from the roots. If an escaped elephant tramples them, they'll be fine. In fact, if you are short on wildfires or escaped elephants, you'll have to do the job yourself every 15 years, just to keep them rejuvenated.
Traditionally eaten with chocolate, the nuts are oil-rich and delicious. The branches were traditionally used for basket weaving in the UK. A very useful and hardy plant.
Our trees are selected from small, hard-shelled hazelnuts that we suspect are American. Great for wildlife, but can also be eaten by you if you get past the difficulty cracking them.
Plant at least two for pollination.
