Honeyberry (Haskap) Plants - The First Berries of Spring
These incredibly cold-hardy and unique small shrubs laugh at late frosts and thrive where blueberries struggle. Native to the boreal forests of North America, eastern Siberia, the Russian Far East, and Northern Japan, they can easily survive minus 40 degrees F or lower!
The tasty oblong blueberry-like fruits are great for fresh eating, juicing, and preserves. Some describe the taste as blueberry meets raspberry with hints of grape. They make an excellent blueberry alternative, thriving in regular garden soil without the acid requirements blueberries demand.
Plant at least two different varieties for cross-pollination and heavier crops.

Aurora -Aurora is quickly becoming the standard for fresh eating honeyberries. While not as deeply pigmented or nutritious as other varieties, it has a higher sugar content and larger berry size than most varieties. Aurora honeyberries ripen mid to late season and flower late.
Boreal Beauty -Vigorous plant and highest producing, but a tarter berry than Blizzard and Beast. Boreal Beauty Honeyberry is another late season variety to extend your honeyberry season with fruit ripening in June.
Boreal Beast -Sweet/tart berry. One of the best selections from the University of Saskatchewan’s Honeyberry breeding program, Boreal Beast features incredibly large fruits that flower late and ripen 2-3 weeks later than most varieties. Yields are so large that this variety amongst many others is being utilized as a commercial crop in Canada.
Boreal Blizzard -Sweetest of the honeyberries, along with Aurora. Another excellent honeyberry introduction from the University of Saskatchewan, Boreal Blizzard produces some of the largest honeyberries of any cultivar and ripens later than most varieties. It has good resistance to powdery mildew and the berries have an excellent flavor.
