Juneberry (Serviceberry/Saskatoon) - Native Multi-Season Beauty

One plant, three names, endless reasons to grow it. Juneberries, serviceberries, and saskatoon berries are all the same delicious native fruit.

These native North American shrubs offer four seasons of beauty: clouds of white spring blooms, sweet purple berries in June, brilliant fall foliage, and striking silvery bark in winter. Is it any wonder even non-permaculture minded landscapers have been using them for years?

The fruit tastes delicious straight from the tree and works perfectly in any recipe calling for blueberries - smoothies, cobblers, pies, muffins, pancakes, and jellies. The fruits resemble a blueberry in shape, size, and color, although somewhat darker or more reddish, but the flavor resembles a sweet juicy apple or pear, with a texture slightly more dry than a blueberry.

Wildlife adore them, pollinators swarm the early blooms, and they thrive in conditions where other fruits struggle - including partial shade and clay soil. Low-maintenance, disease-resistant, and beautiful enough for the front yard.

Princess Diana - Abundant white flowers in early spring. Shrubby tree growing to 15-20 feet tall with 3/8's inch blueish purple fruits with sweet apple-like flavors. Brilliant red long-lasting autumn foliage. And excellent landscape plant! Hardy in zones 3-8.

Success - The first named Juneberry cultivar, with fruits tasting like a sweet pear with hints of apple. Good sized berries more than 3/8's inch in diameter. Plants grow to 6 feet tall and 4 feet wild and average 15 lbs of berries per plant. Hardiness zones 3-7.
