1 year potted seedlings of named cultivars, or 1 year wild dormant bare-root seedlings approximately 10"-20" tall shipped Nov/Dec or Apr/May.
*Plant at least 2 trees for fruit production, spacing them no more than 15 feet apart, and ideally 8-10 feet.
*Hardy to zone 5 and sometimes 4
Our seedlings from named varieties are likely to produce fruit similar to their parents, which are improved cultivars (including Potomac, Overleese, Mango, and Sunflower) with larger, sweeter fruit and a lower seed to pulp ratio than wild types. 1 year old potted seedlings.
Wild seedlings come from smaller, wild seed and are great for wildlife plantings. 1 year-old bareroot seedlings. *Note that pawpaws are more challenging to establish bareroot than many trees. We've lowered the price and sell them only in bundles to reflect this reality.
Pawpaw are the largest native American fruit but they sure don't look like much. Kidney shaped and sized, their green skin hides the toothsome truth; a sweet creamy flesh that tastes like . . . Well, banana mixed with mango maybe? They are a member of the custard apple family and the only member to have strayed so far north.
A natural understory tree, pawpaws grow twenty feet tall but are slow-growing and can easily be trimmed smaller. They will grow just fine in shade, but will produce more fruit in full sun.
They have large tropical looking leaves and a smooth gray elephant skin bark. When grown in full sun they are pyramid shaped and their leaves turn a lovely yellow in the fall, making them a beautiful choice for a lawn tree provided they are not near hardscapes which would bruise the very perishable fruit when it falls.
