Shagbark hickory is one of the best tasting nuts you will come across.

The mother trees that we gather from produce loads of nuts every other year and a light crop on the off years. They make a delightful hickory nut pie and the best cheese cake crust you can imagine as well as delicious additions to salad.

The wood is tough and resilient traditionally used for high impact uses like axe handles and bows. The bark from young saplings can be stripped for basket weaving.

The tree itself is a tall specimen tree with characteristic strips of bark hanging from the trunk.

Hickory wood chips are the premier wood used for smoking meats and the bark strips can be boiled and made into a smoky-flavored syrup for meats, pancakes and anywhere you want a savory, sweet smoky flavor.

Ok, maybe black walnut isn't the only multi-purpose tree in the forest!

Plant at least two trees for heavier yields.
