Willow- what a great family!
Willows are incredibly versatile and we have a few varieties to choose from.
*Pictured bouquets left to right: curly, winter glory, fantail, red-twigged dogwood, black skin, yellow-twigged dogwood, rabbit's foot
*Pictured basketry/weaving sticks left to right: winter green, flame, blackskin, dappled (Blackskin and the smaller twigs of dappled are great for basketry. Flame and wintergreen can also be used for courser weaving)
Dappled Willow- this beautiful pink, white and green leafed willow has often been planted as an ornamental shrub, but it's long flexible twigs can also be woven into baskets and wreaths. Hardiness zone 3+, Height: 10 ft
Useful Willow- this selection from Twisted Tree Farm is just like it's name says, very useful. It grows up to six feet a year of strong flexible rods. It's super hardy and tough and it also gives small pussy willow blooms in the spring. Great for biomass, large weaving projects, and hedges, and possibly livestock fodder. Hardiness zone 4+, Height 12-15 ft
Rabbits Foot- this is a big vigorous pussy willow with giant blooms in the spring. First and second year branches might look like extra large normal blooms but the older ones have an adorable rabbits foot look to them. Hardiness zone 4+, Mature height: 20 ft if un-coppiced
Winter green- this is a miyabeana and like all miyabeanas grows like a wildfire once it's established, up to 10 feet in a year! It's possible to plant rather tall rods and have them grow into small trees in three years.
-This selection has masses of small pussy willows in the spring which looks great in bouquets and wreaths or can be left on the tree to draw oodles of pollinators.
-The long straight branches can be used for coarse weaving and thicker branches can be used for bark for baskets. Also an excellent willow for living fences and structures.
We love Winter Green!
Hardiness zone 4+, Height: 25-50ft un-coppiced
Weeping- This is the classic graceful weeping willow. Plant it where it can drop branches, because you know it will, and enjoy the beauty! Hardiness zone 4+, Height: 30-50 ft.
Curly- these are vigorous willows that can grow 8 feet in a year once established. New growth is a gorgeous orangey-red, but old growth turns greyish, so give this shrub a serious coppicing every year to keep it small and beautiful.
-Use the trimmings for bouquets, dried arrangements, and even baskets. Larger rods can be walking sticks and bean poles. Anywhere you use them, they are a touch of whimsy and wildness.
Hardiness zone 4+, Height 20-40 ft un-coppiced
Black skin- this dark barked beauty can be used to accent baskets, or in dried arrangements. It's not super vigorous and can live more happily as a small bush than most. Hardiness zone 4+, Height: 10 ft
Fantail- this willow shines in the winter when it's large contorted branches make a bold statement. But it's also cool in the spring, when masses of pussy willow blooms pop out on it's twisted branches. Hardiness zone 4+, Height 15 ft, 10 ft wide
Roadside willow -a new introduction for us, discovered (as the name suggests) by a roadside. It's a vigorous fast growing willow (6 feet the first year from a six inch cutting) with bright yellow new growth. It seems to have a tree form. The twigs are extremely flexible, and their color brightens late winter bouquets.
*Willows ship late winter/spring and fall as a bundle of theee 8-12" cuttings for rooting unless otherwise noted.
Cuttings are very easy to start. Simply push into the ground until only 3-4 buds are above ground, being sure buds are pointed up. (Willows will not grow upside down!) Don't let them dry out, and soon they'll be growing their own roots and leaves!
