Grow your own heavy-duty rods for large baskets, garden hurdles, frame construction, and living willow sculptures! These varieties are chosen for strong structural tension, fast wood production, and their ability to handle heavy-use weaves. Cut back annually to harvest stout weavers, or use them to build long-lasting green garden structures.
Varieties & Traits:
Bowle's Hybrid (Salix viminalis 'Bowles Hybrid') A vigorous grower that produces dense growth of tough, strong, and heavy rods. Great for biomass, structures, or coarse weaving.

Rabbit's Foot (Salix leucipithecia 'Rabbit's Foot') A relatively new pussy willow that produces the largest, fluffiest catkins of any we know. Masses of thick, silvery-white catkins cover the tall branches in late winter, providing a high yield for stunning boquets. Our favorite pussy willow!

Winter Green (Salix miyabeana 'Wintergreen') A fast-growing Japanese willow with beautiful green stems and loads of tiny catkins in late winter that pollinators adore, giving bees an early pollen source before anything else is blooming. Stems make adorable mini pussy willow bouquets for Easter events and spring interest. Lowest portions of branches can be a little heavy for basketry. Surprisingly, a percentage of the stems dry black. This is one of our favorite willows, and we consistently recommend it for living fences and structures, or for a vigorous multi-purpose willow that’s also beautiful in the summer and winter landscape.

Uses: structures, coarse basketry, hedges and fences, weaving, pollinators, landscape beauty, floral arrangements
